A young woman of about 21 died at noon Tuesday on Malecón de La Habana while trying to scatter her mother’s ashes into the sea. Her body had not been recovered when the news was reported, and several divers were already in the water searching for her.

The pavement at the scene was completely wet, the sky was partly cloudy and waves were overtopping the seawall. Dozens of people watched from the shoreline as the swell and adverse weather made the maneuver far more dangerous than it appears from land.

The timing mattered. Nine days earlier, a cold front had already driven waves over the Malecón seawall and flooded stretches of the avenue, and by the end of October new episodes of strong winds and coastal flooding were forecast. On a seafront where families often scatter ashes, that kind of weather turns a ritual of farewell into a risk few can control.

The death also fits a darker pattern. In the last four years, at least four deaths or disappearances have been documented in Malecón de La Habana and the bay of La Habana. That count does not explain each case, but it shows that the same strip of coastline keeps drawing people into danger when the sea is high and the wall can no longer hold back the water.

For now, the unanswered question is whether the search will end with a recovery or with another name added to a toll that has been building along the Havana waterfront.
