Wild Vs Mammoth: Minnesota chases a season-high streak in Salt Lake City

The Minnesota Wild can leave Salt Lake City with their longest winning streak of the season tonight, but only if they finish the job against the Utah Mammoth. Minnesota enters the matchup at 8-3-2, carrying 18 points and two straight wins into the final game of a five-game road trip.

This is the kind of night that puts a streak on the line in plain view. Utah is 8-4-0 with 16 points, so the meeting between the top two teams in the Central Division is tight on the standings as well as the schedule. A win would give Minnesota three straight victories and close the trip with a clean climb after it dropped the first two games, including an overtime loss in Edmonton and a defeat in Calgary.

Jesper Wallstedt gets the start for Minnesota, and his season gives the Wild a steadier base than the raw record alone suggests. He is 7-2-2 in 11 starts with a 2.08 goals-against average and a.918 save percentage, and he ranks tied for first in the NHL in wins, seventh in goals-against average and eighth in save percentage. Tonight is only the second time he will face Utah in his career.

The recent form around him has been even more striking. Minnesota beat Seattle and Vancouver while outscoring those teams 5-0 in the second period and outshooting them 31-4 in that frame. In Seattle on Saturday night, the Wild scored three goals while allowing the Kraken just one shot in the second period, a burst so rare that Minnesota has done it only 10 times in franchise history. On the season, the Wild are tied for second with a plus-8 second-period goal differential and a plus-51 shot differential in the middle frame.

That surge is the cleanest reason Minnesota believes the trip can end differently than it began. The first two games exposed how quickly a road swing can unravel, but the last two have flipped the script with sustained pressure and faster starts after the intermission. If the Wild carry that second-period edge into Utah, they do not need perfection. They just need one more night like the last two.

Matt Boldy has been part of that push with eight points in his last six games, 59 shots this season and a point streak that can reach three games. He has five points in seven career games against Utah and has scored in consecutive games. Bobby Brink, meanwhile, is coming off his first goal of the season in Vancouver on Sunday night and can also score in consecutive games again after finding the net against Utah on March 10. Minnesota has enough recent production to make the matchup feel like more than a standings check; it is a chance to show the road trip is ending with momentum, not just relief.
