Nobody Wants This Season 4 turns Noah and Joanne into domestic comedy

Nobody Wants This has moved into its third season by putting Noah and Joanne under the same roof, and that changes everything about the show’s engine. What was once built on first-date nerves and impossible attraction now runs on domestic comedy, with Noah and Joanne exclaiming, in effect, that they live together as the season opens.

That is why Nobody Wants This Season 4 is drawing attention now, even though the series is not actually in a fourth season. Viewers are following how far the romance can go once the will-they-won’t-they question has been answered. Adam Brody’s Noah, a rabbi trying to balance devotion to his faith with the instincts of a regular thirtysomething guy, is now living with Joanne, played by Kristen Bell, the atheist co-host of a frank sex-and-relationships podcast. The setup has shifted from whether they can get together to whether they can make daily life work.

The third season leans hard into that new routine. Noah is rattled by Joanne leaving the fridge door open and turning the dishwasher into a treacherous hellscape of upturned knife blades, while Joanne pushes back against his urge to take her on a dawn stroll. She is also attending classes at temple to educate non-Jews who are about to marry into the faith, a detail that keeps the show’s religious stakes inside the couple’s day-to-day life rather than outside it.

That domestic turn gives the series a comfortable rhythm, but it also exposes a loss. The old fizz has somewhat fizzled. The show still finds pleasure in safe mode, and the ensemble around the central couple keeps it moving when Noah and Joanne are stalled, but one or two episodes in the middle of the season do not really contain a significant event. The result is a romantic comedy that is still amused by its own setup, even as the original charge of the relationship has faded.

There is still enough life in the supporting cast to keep hearts fluttering, including Timothy Simons and Justine Lupe as siblings who may set hearts aflutter. But the main question now is not whether Noah and Joanne can fall in love. It is whether the show can find a new spark strong enough to carry them from living together into whatever comes next, without losing the chemistry that made Nobody Wants This worth watching in the first place.
