A 44-year-old Salvadorian woman was rescued nearly 20 hours after going overboard from a Royal Caribbean ship in the Ionian Sea near Zakynthos, Greece. She was found conscious on Oct. 10, floating inside a lifebuoy before being brought ashore for medical monitoring and examinations.

The rescue brought a sudden end to a search that began on the morning of Oct. 9, when the ship was sailing southwest of Zakynthos and a local emergency plan was immediately activated. By the time the woman was found, the operation had drawn in the Hellenic Coast Guard, a Hellenic Coast Guard Patrol Vessel, passing ships and a Super Puma helicopter from the Hellenic Air Force.

A cargo ship located her at sea and crew members spotted her in the dark water inside the lifebuoy. They threw a rope, and she pulled herself toward the vessel. That detail matters because it is the strongest evidence that she survived the long drift at sea under her own power, even as the rescue effort stretched across nearly a full day.

What remains unclear is how she ended up overboard in the first place. That gap is now part of a preliminary investigation by the Katakolo Port Authority, while Royal Caribbean Group said its ship immediately launched a search and rescue effort and that its Our Care Team was supporting the guest’s loved ones during a difficult time.

For now, the most important fact is also the simplest one: the woman was found alive. After 20 hours in open water, that outcome turned a missing passenger case into an active inquiry into how a routine voyage off Greece became a rescue operation at sea.
