The White House pushed its phone app back into view Monday, using it as a messaging blast after Donald Trump banned, MS NOW and Politico from the White House. By Monday afternoon, the app was charting at No. 11 in Apple's news category, giving the administration a visible channel just as its fight with the press tightened.
That surge mattered because people were looking for the app precisely when the White House was using it as a replacement for normal coverage. The app first appeared on Apple's app store on March 27, but its latest version came loaded with TrumpTV promotions, social feeds from White House accounts and a front page built around Trump's preferred message. One tap led to the White House website, where a video showed Trump swaying side to side on the stage of the American Business Forum, followed by statistics on deportations and a claim that Trump had ended the Israel-Hamas War.
The app also pushed a Truth Social post from Friday in which Trump boasted that he had negotiated for the U.S. to develop and operate military bases on Greenland. Around it were banners for campaign priorities such as grow the economy and lead the world in AI, along with a button inviting users to text President Trump. That prompt opened Messenger with a pre-fabricated message reading Greatest President Ever!, making the app feel less like a newsroom and more like a loyalty channel.
At the bottom of the home page, the White House added a survey asking whether states that allow noncitizens to register to vote should face federal funding penalties, with five answer choices and no sign of how the results would be used. The unanswered poll summed up the broader problem with the app: it was presented as a news replacement, but it operated much closer to propaganda than a bona fide news offering.
The move also followed a rare show of solidarity from the press pool after the bans, even as Trump was effectively muted during the unveiling of a new White House helipad because the pool was not there to mic him up. What remains unclear is how far the White House intends to take TrumpTV and what, beyond the essentials station label, it is actually meant to become.
