The Rams placed Myles Garrett on Injured Reserve on Thursday after knee surgery, a move that guarantees the outside linebacker will miss at least the next four games. Garrett, who has a knee injury, is out through a stretch that runs from Monday Night Football in Week 2 through meetings with the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills.
That timetable matters now because the Rams open that stretch Monday at SoFi Stadium against the Giants, making Garrett's absence immediate rather than theoretical. Sean McVay said on Monday he did not want to put a return date on Garrett until the team had all the information after surgery, and he kept that line on Thursday, saying the Rams are not going to rush him back.
McVay said Garrett is feeling good and pointed to how quickly he has moved since the operation: he had crutches yesterday and was walking without them today. The coach said Garrett is going to miss those four weeks at a minimum, but stopped short of putting a firmer calendar on his return.
That leaves the Rams with a clear short-term absence and an unclear finish line. Before Garrett comes back, McVay said the team wants him feeling good, back on the practice field and able to do everything needed to perform at the level he has been accustomed to, which is why the minimum absence is set and the real return date is still open.
