Joby Aviation said on Friday that an aircraft equipped with its autonomy technology flew more than 3,100 miles across the United States without a human pilot taking control, a trip the company called the first-ever autonomous flight across the country. The flight was completed in a converted Cessna Caravan and included autonomous taxiing, takeoffs, navigation and landings.
The company said the aircraft was supervised remotely from its headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, while a pilot stayed on board for compliance even as Joby said the plane carried out the operation autonomously. That combination highlights the narrow line between proving the system can work and satisfying the rules needed to put it in the air.
Joby is best known for building eVTOL aircraft for an eventual urban air taxi service, but this flight was meant to show something broader: that the same autonomy stack could be fitted to conventional aircraft and used in medical transport, disaster response and defense logistics. The company has spent years seeking type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for its all-electric aircraft, and it has also deepened ties with the U.S. Department of Defense as it pushes beyond a single consumer market.
The demonstration also fits into a larger defense strategy. Joby plans to bring to market a regional airframe equipped with its autonomy stack, a platform it says could handle defense missions and commercial freight transport. That effort has been supported by a $17 million Air Force contract with AFWERX, while in August the company said it acquired Resonant Sciences for $500 million in cash and stock to strengthen its defense business.
Resonant Sciences now sits inside that dedicated defense unit, which also includes turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft projects and the autonomy technology stack. Last year, Joby signed an agreement with L3Harris Technologies to explore a gas-turbine hybrid vertical take-off and landing aircraft that can fly autonomously for defense applications.
Joby said the aircraft will now head back to the West Coast over the next two weeks, with stops in cities including Louisville, Kentucky, and Salt Lake City. The return leg will show whether the company can repeat the same kind of autonomous performance on another long route, with the same aircraft and the same system under the same scrutiny.
