Prince Harry stepped back into an official-looking role in the United Kingdom on Thursday, attending his first formal engagement since moving back with Meghan and their two children last month. He arrived at the Royal Naval College in London for the Invictus Spirit Awards, waved to photographers and posed with members of the Irish Guards.
That appearance matters now because it is the clearest sign yet of how Harry is resuming public life on British soil while living outside the old royal structure. He wore a tuxedo bedecked with military medals and told those there, “It’s good to be back on British soil,” a line that landed as more than a greeting after six years in California and a break from senior royal duties in 2020.
The timing also made Thursday unusually crowded on the royal calendar. King Charles III delivered a speech on artificial intelligence at a conference in Scotland, while Prince William stepped out with Kate, the Princess of Wales, for a royal visit to the Isle of Bute. Harry’s return, by contrast, was centered on the Invictus Spirit Awards, a celebration of the Invictus Games he founded over a decade ago.
He kept the mood light when asked about the family’s first stretch back in the U.K. Harry told HELLO! Magazine that the last two weeks had been “eventful,” then added, “But, you know, we’re getting stuck into the work. Kids are in school. We’re happy.” Archie is expected to attend school in the U.K., a detail that gives the move a permanence the family has not publicly spelled out in full.
That is also where the open question sits. The royal family’s Sept. 8 letter said Harry and Meghan would remain private citizens and would not be working royals while living in the U.K., and a spokesperson said they were surprised by the message. Yet Harry is now showing up at engagements that look official, even as the couple’s stay is described only as an extended period of time and it is not publicly known where they are living.
Harry is expected to attend and speak at the WellChild Awards in London next week, and he is scheduled to take part in the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting on Sept. 22-23 in New York. For now, the pattern is clear enough: Harry is back in the U.K., he is building a separate public calendar, and the line between private citizen and royal figure is still being tested in real time.
