Noah Reid is heading back into the CBS universe with a one-episode guest role in the upcoming second season of Sheriff Country, and the part could turn into much more if the network moves ahead with its planned medical offshoot. Reid will play Dr. Hudson “Hud” Henshaw, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Edgewater Memorial Hospital, a character being positioned for a possible series regular run in the untitled spinoff.
The casting lands just as interest builds around Sheriff Country ahead of its Oct. 9 premiere on CBS. Viewers searching for Schitt's Creek will recognize Reid immediately as Patrick, but this new role puts him in a far different lane: a doctor from Deadwater who grew up as the proud son of convicted felons and refused to use family drug money to pay for medical school. That backstory gives Hud a harder edge than the usual hospital lead and ties him directly to the medical team in Edgewater, California.
The setup also mirrors the way CBS used a guest appearance to launch Sheriff Country itself. Before that series was picked up, Morena Baccarin introduced Sheriff Mickey Fox on Fire Country, turning a single episode into the start of a new branch of the franchise. The network is now trying the same kind of low-risk introduction with the medical spinoff informally known as Edge Med, though it has not ordered the series and has not said whether Reid’s character will ever move beyond the guest slot.
That is the part that makes the casting matter. Reid is being lined up for a show that does not yet exist as a series, which means his one-episode appearance carries the weight of an audition for a lead role. If CBS decides to proceed, Hud is already built to fit the center of the story: a chief doctor with a strict moral code, described in the character notes by the idea of first doing no harm. If CBS does not go forward, the role stays a one-off introduction and the spinoff remains another idea on the table.
For Reid, the move extends a run that has taken him from Kevin From Work in 2015 to Schitt's Creek, where he won a Canadian Screen Award and shared a Comedy Ensemble SAG Award with the cast, and later to Outer Range and an arc on Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat. He is next set to appear in Yaga, the Bell and Crave series that AMC+ will carry in the U.S. For CBS, the real question is simpler: whether one guest turn can be enough to justify Edge Med becoming the next series in the Fire Country and Sheriff Country world.
