Apple introduced iPhone Duo on Tuesday in Cupertino, California, putting its first foldable iPhone on display and giving the company a new hardware line built around two screens instead of one. The device arrives with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and Apple said pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability following on Friday, October 23.
The launch is being watched closely because Apple has spent years building toward a foldable model, and John Ternus framed it as a turning point, saying it is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. He also said iPhone Duo shows what becomes possible when hardware and software are engineered together, a line that helps explain why the company is tying the phone to iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI from the start.
On paper, the sizes are part of the pitch. Apple said the outer display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max, giving the foldable a larger canvas without abandoning a pocketable shape. That difference matters because the company is not selling a bigger slab of glass so much as a device that shifts between an outside screen for quick checks and a larger inside screen for work, video and games.
Apple is also leaning hard on durability, even as the product’s purpose is to fold. The company pointed to a precision hinge and a special nano-texture finish on the inner display that minimizes glare, along with a custom-designed vapor chamber, dual-battery architecture and the new A20 Pro. Those details are meant to make the phone feel practical, but they also underline the challenge Apple is taking on: a foldable design has to promise everyday ease while hiding the compromises that usually come with a moving display.
The rest of the package fills out that bet. iPhone Duo comes in star white and night sky, includes a hidden FaceTime camera, and will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year. The open question now is not whether Apple has entered the foldable market — it has — but how far the company is prepared to push the price and whether buyers will accept a first-generation design that asks them to trade familiar form for a new way to use iPhone. That answer starts to arrive when pre-orders open on Friday, October 16.
