Week 8 Defensive Rankings: Bengals Lead a Tight Fantasy Race

The Cincinnati Bengals are the top Week 8 defensive rankings play because they get Tennessee at home, and that matchup is hard to ignore. Tennessee is last in total offense and 31st in points per game, which gives fantasy managers the kind of path they want when choosing a defense in a volatile week.

The Bengals have 21 sacks, are tied for the fifth-most takeaways in the league and sit sixth in fantasy points among defenses. That combination makes them the safest choice on a list where reliability matters more than big-name appeal, and it is why they rise above the rest when Week 8 lineup decisions get tight.

The Jaguars also belong in the conversation after coming off the bye and heading into a meeting with the Indianapolis Colts. They were burned in London two weeks ago with their worst defensive effort of the season, but they are still leading the league in run defense for the second year in a row. That profile gives them a steadier floor than the bad outing might suggest.

The Steelers and Broncos round out the usable tier. Pittsburgh is third among all defenses in fantasy points and tied for third in sacks, while Denver has climbed since Week 1 after opening with a loss at Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs. Since Week 1, only the Vikings have more fantasy points among defenses than Denver, and Jonathon Cooper’s return helped boost an already strong pass rush.

Seattle is the one defense that asks fantasy managers to trust consistency over flash. The Seahawks won their championship last year with defense, then followed it Sunday night by holding the Chiefs to 213 yards of offense, three points and three third-down conversions in 11 attempts, with one takeaway and one sack. They are sitting in fourth place on average and in fourth place overall, but they do not always deliver the kind of explosion fantasy managers chase.

That is the real tradeoff in Week 8: the best defenses are not always the most exciting ones. The Bengals have the cleanest matchup, the Jaguars have the matchup and the track record, and the Steelers and Broncos bring enough pressure to matter. If a manager wants the safest start, Cincinnati is the bet to make, and the only real question is whether Tennessee can offer enough resistance to change that.
