Severe winds knocked down power lines and trees across the Kansas City metro on Wednesday afternoon, leaving more than 1,200 Evergy customers without electricity by Wednesday night.
Residents in Lake Winnebago, Pleasant Hill, Strasburg and Holden were among those affected as the outages spread across the area. The National Weather Service said multiple Missouri communities reported power outages, broken tree limbs and downed wires, and the same pattern appeared in Baldwin City, Prescott, Pleasanton, Clinton, Kingsville and Strasburg.
The damage in Baldwin City was consistent with wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, while Holden documented gusts up to 59 mph during the afternoon storms. That kind of wind is enough to bring down limbs, snap lines and interrupt service across a broad area, which is what happened here.
The complication for Evergy customers was timing. By Wednesday night, the outage map still showed more than 1,200 customers without electricity even as showers and storms were expected to continue overnight and into Thursday morning. That leaves repair crews facing fresh weather while they work through outages already stretching across several communities.
For now, the storm has done what high winds do most efficiently: it has turned a routine Wednesday afternoon into a night of dark houses, damaged trees and waiting. The next stretch of weather will decide how quickly storm damage repair can begin to catch up.
