Wolverine On Metacritic: Marvel's Wolverine Review Hails Combat, Flags Story Gaps

Marvel's Wolverine has a clear early verdict now: its combat looks ferocious, fast, and almost perfectly tuned, even as its story and linear structure leave some room to be desired. Game Informer’s review finds Insomniac’s take on Logan strongest where it should be strongest, in the brutal efficiency of a character who tears through enemies with speed, slashes, and a sense of unstoppable force.

That is why Wolverine on Metacritic is drawing attention today. Players looking for a score are really looking for a read on whether the game’s core loop lands, and the answer from this review is yes. The battles are described as deeply satisfying and smartly balanced, with Logan’s attacks, dodges, and parries feeding a momentum-based system that powers healing and rage. Additional abilities unlock gradually, secondary challenge stages add wave-based gauntlets, and a New Game + gives players a way to push the difficulty and replay favorite fights.

The praise, though, is not matched across the whole game. The same review says the accompanying story sometimes stumbles, the driving linearity does not always land, and the game’s most important characters feel shaped by what is missing as much as what is present. Professor Xavier and Magneto are notably absent from this take on the X-Men mythology, and while the moment-to-moment exchanges between characters are called excellent, the slower stretches do not always work because everything is tightly on rails.

The bigger problem comes later. The second half of the game reportedly becomes harder to follow, with some moments leaving the reviewer scratching their head and the narrative feeling more interested in teasing where Insomniac wants to go next than in resolving the relationships it has already set up. That leaves the review with a split conclusion: the action is strong enough to carry the experience, but the story appears to ask players to accept momentum where it should be delivering payoff.

For now, that is the shape of the conversation around Marvel's Wolverine. The game does not wear out its welcome, and its linear adventure reaches the finish before the ferocious melees lose their punch, but the unresolved question is whether the final score on Metacritic will reflect a combat system that impresses almost everywhere while the narrative lags behind it.
