EA shuts down BioWare as Mass Effect Campaign Times Square hits a wall

Electronic Arts said Wednesday it is closing BioWare and ending early development on the next Mass Effect project as part of a broader restructuring that will cut about 3% of its global workforce. The move affects around 400 staffers and includes the shutdown of BioWare's Canadian office in Edmonton.

The timing is why the search for Mass Effect Campaign Times Square is spiking now: a franchise that helped define BioWare is suddenly being folded into a companywide reset. Cam Weber and David Tinson told employees in a memo that the company has taken a hard look at how it operates, and BioWare later said in its own post that early work on the next Mass Effect is ending after more than three decades of shared history.

BioWare's name still carries weight because of the games it built over more than 30 years, including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem. But EA is not walking away from its broader games lineup. It said Battlefield 6 was a great success, that it will keep investing heavily in Apex Legends over the next few years, and that Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game remain two huge launches ahead.

That is what makes the memo land so hard. EA is praising Battlefield 6 as a win while cutting jobs and closing BioWare at the same time, a reminder that the company is rewarding the projects it sees as strongest while ending others before they get far enough to become public-facing bets. In the same memo, Weber and Tinson said Respawn and DICE will be brought together on a future project, while EA Sports has two new projects in development that will be revealed over the next few months and is in pre-production to bring back Fight Night after a 15-year hiatus.

The unanswered question is not whether EA is changing direction; it already has. It is how far that change reaches, and whether the next round of studio work will leave any room for Mass Effect beyond the closed chapter BioWare announced Wednesday.
