Metroid Ravenous was officially unveiled during today’s Nintendo Direct, giving Nintendo’s side-scrolling Metroid line a new sequel to Metroid Dread and a firm launch date: January 28, 2027 for Switch 2.
The trailer put Samus Aran in immediate danger, with strange enemies zapping away her energy until she snapped back, “It’s eat or be eaten.” That line fits the title more cleanly than a random subtitle would: the game appears to be framing survival as a simple rule of the hunt, and the name now looks tied to Raven Beak in a way fans had already guessed.
That guess had been circulating for a while. Before the announcement, the name Metroid Ravenous surfaced in a swiftly deleted ratings board listing in Brazil, which turned the leak into a preview rather than a spoiler. Today’s reveal confirmed the title and the broad shape of the game, even if the trailer stayed short on story specifics.
MercurySteam appears to be back at the controls, which keeps the project anchored to the same partnership that produced Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. That matters because these games sit apart from the first-person Metroid Prime subseries and occupy the end of the series’ chronology to date, making this less a side project than the next chapter in the main side-scrolling branch.
The missing piece is still the most interesting one. Nintendo has shown the threat, the name and the release date, but not yet the full shape of what Samus will face when the game arrives nearly three years from now. For now, fans have a confirmed sequel, a locked-in date and a hint that the enemies in the trailer are only the first sign of something worse.
