Apple still has not said what it will call its first foldable iPhone, leaving the device without an official name as the Surprise and Shine event approaches. That silence has turned the branding question into part of the story, because the name may be the clearest signal yet of how Apple wants people to think about the phone.
Mark Gurman said everyone calls the device Ultra internally, but that label may be less certain than it sounds. Max Weinbach said last month that iPhone Ultra seems off, and the reason is not hard to see: this foldable is not expected to have a telephoto lens, Face ID, the Action button or the longest battery, and it probably will not get the same vapor cooling chamber as the Pro iPhones.
The search for the right name is drawing on Apple’s own history. The company used Plus from iPhone 6 Plus through iPhone 8 Plus, then shifted to Max with iPhone XS Max. It later introduced the first Pro iPhone, iPhone 11 Pro, while naming the bigger model iPhone 11 Pro Max, and it has used Pro Max for the larger Pro phone ever since. Apple then brought Plus back for the iPhone 14 through iPhone 16 series before replacing iPhone 16 Plus with an iPhone Air last year. Those older labels are now the frame around the foldable, which is expected to measure around 4mm when open, compared with 5.6mm for the iPhone Air.
That leaves Apple with awkward options. iPhone Duo and iPhone Folio have been thrown around as possible names, while Ray Wong suggested iPhone Max and argued it would not deserve a Pro label because it does not have telephoto, the longest battery, Face ID or the action button. The logic matters because Apple’s naming system has usually matched capability, and this foldable appears to sit between the company’s familiar top-end tiers rather than cleanly inside one of them.
The company is likely to settle the question tomorrow at Surprise and Shine, but the unresolved part is not whether the foldable exists. It is whether Apple will present it as a new family, or tuck it under iPhone Air and let the hardware define the pitch. Either way, the name will tell buyers what Apple thinks the device is before they ever hold it.
