Stevie Wonder is bringing his Stevie Wonder tour to Detroit for two nights at the Fox Theatre on Dec. 8 and 9, and each show will be built around one album: Songs in the Key of Life, performed in full. The dates place Wonder back in a theater where he has history, but this run is part of a much larger sweep that reaches across Europe before ending with six U.S. shows.
The Fox Theatre concerts go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 through Ticketmaster, while other U.S. dates open Thursday, Sept. 10. The timing is why fans are paying attention now: the schedule has just been set, and Detroit is one of the clearest stops on the 16-city tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Songs in the Key of Life.
That album still defines a stretch of Wonder’s career that many listeners measure against everything that came after it. Released in 1976, the Grammy-winning double record produced Sir Duke, Isn’t She Lovely and I Wish, and the new tour is built around hearing the whole thing from start to finish. Wonder last played the Fox Theatre in 1995, though he had been a frequent presence there in the 1960s as part of Motown’s Motortown Revues.
That is what makes this booking feel like a homecoming, even if the tour itself is anything but local. It starts Oct. 15 in Paris, moves through Europe, and then crosses back to the U.S. for just six shows, with listed stops at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, Madison Square Garden in New York and Capital One Arena in Washington, DC before Detroit closes in.
The shape of the itinerary leaves one clear point behind the celebration: this is a limited run, not a broad stadium sweep, and that makes the Detroit dates stand out even more. Wonder’s return to the Fox Theatre gives Michigan fans a rare chance to hear Songs in the Key of Life the way he intends to play it, and if the past is any guide, the question now is not whether the album still matters, but how many people will get a seat when the sale opens.
