The Secret Woman arrived globally on Netflix on August 28 and almost immediately started climbing the platform's movie chart. In the days since its debut, the 119-minute Danish mystery has sat near the top, with FlixPatrol placing it behind only The Whisper Man.
That surge is why viewers are searching for it now. The film centers on Louise, played by Natalie Madueño, who runs a small café on a Norwegian island and has no memories from before her life there. Then a stranger tells her she may really be Helene Söderberg, a wealthy shipping heiress who vanished from Denmark three years earlier, and the story turns on the choice she makes next.
Louise leaves the man she loves and goes back to a marriage, a young son and a fortune she cannot remember. Claes Bang plays the husband, and Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg directed the film after making Loving Adults. The Secret Woman is based on a 2017 bestseller published under the name Anna Ekberg, the joint pseudonym of Danish authors Jacob Weinreich and Anders Rønnow Klarlund.
The quick rise matters because Netflix has kept feeding demand for Scandinavian thrillers that move fast and lean hard into secrets, reversals and damaged marriages. The film also wears its Gone Girl influence openly, which helps explain why a domestic mystery from Denmark can still break through on a global platform even when the response is uneven.
Not everyone is convinced it earns the attention. gave The Secret Woman two stars and called it “a scatty plot that won't be worrying Stieg Larsson or Jo Nesbø any time soon.” That criticism lands on the very thing driving the plot: the film keeps asking Louise to trust a story about herself that may be false, while never fully settling whether she is Helene Söderberg or an impostor living inside someone else’s life.
