Twitch suffered a major outage soon after the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look premiered on Netflix, leaving users reporting problems across web, chat and video. Twitch Status showed multiple major outages at the same time.
That is why the question, Is Twitch down, spread so quickly: people trying to use the platform found chat failing, login attempts stalling and search acting up just as interest in the presentation surged. Among those reacting live were Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed, while the Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay presentation was also available to co-stream by content creators.
As of writing, roughly 180,000 people were watching Grand Theft Auto 6 live streams on Twitch, with another 80,000 on Grand Theft Auto 5. The scale matters because the Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay reveal drew 3.97 million viewers across commentator livestreams and overwhelmed Twitch and Netflix in the process.
Twitch said it had received reports of impacted services and was looking into the issue, but it did not explicitly confirm the outage was caused by the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look or by the traffic around it. The company said the problem could show up as chat not working, login difficulties or search being impaired, and the status page was still flagging trouble across several core functions.
That leaves the central unanswered point in place: whether the rush of attention around the reveal simply exposed a weak spot in Twitch, or whether the platform was already under enough strain that the premiere pushed it over the edge.
