DC Studios’ Supergirl will arrive on HBO Max on Thursday, September 10, giving Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El a streaming launch after its theatrical premiere in June. The film will then air on HBO linear on Saturday, September 12, at 8 p.m. ET, with an American Sign Language version streaming exclusively on HBO Max the same day.
The timing gives HBO Max subscribers a clean date to mark on the calendar, and it also puts the film back in front of viewers while the conversation around it is still fresh. Supergirl reached theaters in June, but its move to streaming comes after mixed notices from critics and a box-office run that fell short of expectations. For viewers who skipped the theatrical release, September now becomes the first easy chance to see why HBO Max is making the title available so soon after its June debut.
That release plan also fits the way premium services now extend the life of a film without waiting for a long gap. Supergirl will be exclusive to HBO Max first, then move to HBO two days later, with the American Sign Language edition handled through HBO Max as well. The friction is hard to miss.
