Mark Harmon is back as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and NCIS: Origins will make that return visible from the first episode of Season 3 on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The new chapter does not treat him like a one-off surprise. It folds Gibbs into a season-long arc that brings the character back into the franchise story after his exit from NCIS in 2021.
That is why fans are looking now. The season premiere, titled Don't You Forget About Me, is the first place Harmon will be seen in character, and it comes with the first look at him as Gibbs. The series is setting up a long run rather than a quick guest turn, which gives the return a different weight from the occasional cameo he has already made as the show's narrator.
The new season is built to move between the past and the present day, using the younger Gibbs' early 1990s work with the Naval Investigative Service at Camp Pendleton to explain what reaches him later. The story is designed to show how the aftermath of a case from those years catches up with the former agent, turning what begins as a look back into something that follows Gibbs forward. In practical terms, the season is not only asking what happened then, but why it still matters now.
David North said the arc was created to give fans what they wanted, and he made clear that Gibbs is not starting this story in a place of peace. When viewers first see him in the premiere, he is still in Alaska with his trusted rescue dog, but that calm does not last. North said the ghosts from Gibbs' past are closing in and may be enough to pull him out of retirement, which is as close as the production has come to answering whether the character is truly leaving that life behind.
He also left open a harder possibility. Asked about Gibbs' future, North said NCIS has a history of putting characters in danger and would not rule out the character being killed off, even while saying Gibbs means as much to him as he does to fans. That keeps the return from becoming a simple victory lap. The show is bringing Gibbs back, but it is also making clear that his next chapter is not guaranteed to end safely.
For now, the cleanest answer is that Harmon is returning in a real, season-spanning way, not just showing up for a brief nostalgic beat. The season begins on Tuesday, Oct. 6, and the unresolved part is not whether Gibbs appears, but how far NCIS: Origins will go once the past starts closing in on him.
