In July, she spoke to Wonderland about the record she is making and made clear it is being built around love songs, though not in a simple way. She described it as a love story with a romantic thread, said it reflects where she is in her life, and added that a peaceful kind of love has run through her last three records.
Cyrus also gave the project shape in a way that is easy to count. She said she went in with 10 songs in mind, knew the album would be 10 songs, and said the process felt organic and really unforced because she started with the tracklist and did not drift from it. She said she already knew the color would be red, which matches the imagery fans had already started sharing before the name change post arrived.
There is, though, a harder edge to the timing. The new-era tease was already underway before August 25, when Dolly Parton died, even though Cyrus later wrote in her tribute that she would take her godmother’s advice and use her feelings to create music.
