A passenger's laptop caught fire on American Airlines Flight 2398 on Friday, and the plane landed safely at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas before emergency personnel met it at the gate.

One person received medical attention on site and was released after the landing, while the pilot told air traffic control there was a cabin fire in the back of the airplane and that flight attendants were trying to put it out. The pilot also said four to five passengers were burned by the laptop, though American Airlines said only that the device was quickly contained after reports of smoke during landing.

That makes the case unusual even by aviation standards: the aircraft came in safely, but the fire was serious enough to trigger a cabin alert and a response as the jet rolled in. For travelers searching now, the key detail is not that the fire started, but that it happened on a commercial flight that was already coming down and still left people needing care.

The cause of the fire was not given. What is clear is that the incident fits a wider pattern the FAA has been warning about for years. The regulator says lithium batteries, including those in laptops, can overheat because of damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging or improper packing, and it says such batteries must be stowed in carry-on baggage only.

The risk is not theoretical. So far this year, the FAA has recorded 58 verified lithium battery air incidents involving smoke, fire or extreme heat. Over the last 20 years, its highest count in this category was 84 cases related to laptops, a reminder that the device passengers carry every day can become the one that changes a flight in seconds.

That concern has also shown up outside the US. In May, a UK-bound EasyJet flight from Egypt was diverted to Rome after a power bank was found charging in a passenger's luggage in the hold of the aircraft, and the trip was rescheduled for the next day. The Civil Aviation Authority has since warned that portable chargers are causing a growing number of serious issues on flights worldwide and says they carry serious risks of overheating or catching fire.

For American Airlines Flight 2398, the unanswered question is what made the laptop fail in the first place. What matters next is whether the device was being carried in the cabin, whether investigators look at the battery itself, and whether the episode leads airlines to push harder on the fire risks that can begin with a single laptop and spread before a plane even reaches the gate.
