Netflix has set Stranger Things: Tales from '85 for a second season, and the animated return is now scheduled to premiere on Sept. 17, 2026. The announcement gives the Stranger Things Animated Series Season 2 search a clear answer: the next chapter arrives less than six months after the show’s debut.
The timing matters because the first season only arrived on Apr. 23, 2026, and Netflix moved to renew it five days later. That quick turnaround suggests the streamer wanted to keep the momentum alive around a series that sends Eleven and the Hawkins crew back into the winter of 1985, between the second and third seasons of Stranger Things.
Eric Robles, who developed the series alongside the Duffer Brothers, said the new season will push into places the show has not visited before. He pointed to a mine in Hawkins that has not been explored yet, a detail that hints the next run will expand the town’s geography instead of simply revisiting the same corridors, basements and back roads that have already defined the franchise.
Season 2 is also set to pick up right after the Season 1 finale, with the toxic influence of the Upside Down bleeding into the winter landscape. The synopsis says Hawkins will become ground zero for ghostly apparitions and mysterious entities, while the crew still has to deal with ordinary teenage problems like planning for Valentine's Day. That mix keeps the series rooted in the familiar even as it pushes into new territory.
There is also a larger franchise shift underneath the announcement. The main live-action Stranger Things run ended in December 2025 with Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up, but the universe is continuing on Netflix through animation. With the second season already dated, the spinoff is no longer just a bridge between eras; it is becoming part of the franchise’s next phase.
What remains open is how far the new season will go once it reaches that mine in Hawkins. Netflix has already confirmed the date, the setup and the return of the core crew. The unanswered question is how much new ground the series can cover before the Upside Down reaches it first.
