Grey’s Anatomy is getting a new spinoff in the 2026-2027 season, and Meg Marinis says it will leave the hospital corridors behind for a rural West Texas medical center. She is co-creating and writing the untitled series with Shonda Rhimes, while Ellen Pompeo is executive producing the new show.

The timing matters because Grey’s just returned Thursday night with its season 23 premiere, “Collide,” and the franchise is still very much alive on ABC. Marinis also said the new show is related to Grey’s, but its stories will be different, a signal that the next chapter is meant to widen the world rather than simply clone it.

Marinis said she wants the spinoff to dig into what is happening in medical deserts and into the divide between people who can afford excellent healthcare and the people who cannot. She said the team is looking at the actual communities and true stories out in rural West Texas, which suggests the series will focus less on big-city medicine and more on the daily strain of getting care in places where resources are thin and distances are long.

There is still an unanswered question at the center of the franchise’s future: Marinis said no one has told her when Grey’s Anatomy itself will end. She said the Grey’s team and Rhimes want that to be a collaborative decision, even as work on the spinoff moves ahead and she says they are far enough along for her to be really, really excited.

That leaves Grey’s in a familiar but unusual place. The show has already spawned Private Practice and Station 19, and now it is expanding again while its main series keeps going. For viewers, the next confirmed step is not a farewell season but a new story set for the 2026-2027 season, with West Texas at its center and the end of Grey’s still unwritten.
