Jefferson White’s Jimmy is back in Marshals season 2, and this time he is stepping into Kayce Dutton’s orbit for real. The return gives the CBS series a fresh pairing inside the Yellowstone universe, with Jimmy joining Kayce as he tries to keep ranch work, fatherhood and marshal duties from pulling him apart.
That matters now because the new season is not just adding another familiar face. It is building a relationship between two characters who, by Luke Grimes’ account, did not really have one in Yellowstone and barely shared scenes. In Marshals Episode 3 searches, that is the point: Jimmy is no longer just a name from the wider world, but part of Kayce’s next chapter.
Grimes says Kayce is having a hard time juggling everything on his plate, and the pressure makes Jimmy’s return feel useful rather than decorative. Kayce is rebuilding his life after his wife’s death, has been brought in by his former SEAL team leader to join the U.S. Marshals, and is still trying to turn part of his East Camp land into an equine therapy center for veterans. Jimmy fits into that mess because he comes back with a sense of debt, saying he owes John Dutton for saving his life and putting him on a new path.
That is also where the friction sits. Jimmy had moved to Texas toward the end of his Yellowstone run, while Marshals stays rooted in Montana, so his return is not just a casting update. It pulls a character tied to one branch of the story back into another, even as the new series keeps its feet planted in a different place. The result is a cleaner, more immediate connection between the men than the franchise ever gave them before.
Ash Santos said White brings “such vivacious energy” to set and is so bright that he “kind of lights the whole set up,” and she said she has already had a few scenes with him as Andrea. White’s improvisation, she said, makes the scenes funnier and sharper, which suggests the show is not simply checking a continuity box with Jimmy’s return. It is using him to give Kayce a live wire to bounce against.
What remains unanswered is how much of season 2 Jimmy will cover and when the recurring appearances begin. For now, Marshals has done the important part: it has made Jimmy’s return feel like a story move, not a nostalgia play, and it has set Kayce up with a relationship that can carry weight beyond a single episode.
