The New York Giants are trading Daniel Faalele to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a late-round 2027 draft pick, moving on from a guard they signed only months ago before the season even began. Faalele’s exit comes after one preseason game and after the Giants had been treating him as part of their interior line plan.

That is why his name is drawing attention now. The Giants signed him to a one-year contract before the 2026 NFL Draft, then watched him work through spring and summer as a backup at both left guard and right guard. He had been expected to serve as the team’s swing guard, the sort of reserve who can cover multiple spots when injuries or lineup changes hit.

Instead, the Giants are sending him away after Saturday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, where Faalele posted a 0.0 pass blocking grade and a 40.2 overall score in 13 snaps. For a player trying to hold down a backup role, that kind of number is hard to ignore, especially when the roster is still being sorted out before the regular season.

The move also underscores how quickly the Giants have kept adjusting their interior line. During the 2026 NFL Draft, they selected Francis ‘Sisi’ Mauigoa to play right guard, and Daniel Faalele had been competing in the background as the team looked for dependable depth. On Tuesday, the second-team guards were Aaron Stinnie and Josh Ezeudu, while Jake Kubas handled 29 snaps at center and guard on Saturday and earned a 79.8 grade.

Faalele’s path makes the trade easier to read. He started at right guard for the Baltimore Ravens for the past two seasons under John Harbaugh, then arrived in New York on a one-year deal, but never firmly settled into the job the Giants appeared to have in mind. The Jaguars get a former starter with experience, while the Giants get the kind of late-round 2027 draft pick that adds flexibility without changing the top of the board.

What the Giants receive in that 2027 pick is still not clear, and that is the remaining detail that matters. The compensation is enough to move Faalele now, but it leaves the club’s exact return open as it continues to reshape the depth chart around the players who held up better in August.
