Mendoza arrived this offseason after backing up his brother, Fernando Mendoza, at Indiana, and early in his time with the Yellow Jackets, he has already given the staff reason to believe the transition can move faster than usual.
Weinke, who won the Heisman Trophy, said Mendoza not only absorbs the offense but also brings suggestions of his own, a sign that the fit is more than just memorization. He said Georgia Tech will work with what Mendoza feels comfortable doing, even as the offense keeps its broader shape and continues to grow from pieces used before. That flexibility helps explain why the coaching staff sounds optimistic about a first-time starter who is still learning the full menu.
The catch is that the system is not simple. The George Godsey offense is built around variety, and Weinke made clear that Georgia Tech is not stripping it down just because a transfer quarterback is new to the room. Mendoza, he said, can handle it. That is the line that matters most for Georgia Tech, because if it is true, the Yellow Jackets may have landed a major transfer who can shape 2026 rather than spend the year catching up.
For Mendoza, the next step is plain enough: keep mastering the offense and turn the early trust into a first start. The staff has not publicly pinned down when that comes, but the way Weinke talks about him suggests Georgia Tech does not view that wait as long.
