That matters because Trump is seeking up to $10 billion in damages from the over the 2024 documentary that used the footage. The broadcaster has been pressing for financial information to argue over whether the clip caused damage anywhere near that level, and the judge said the trust’s records are relevant to that analysis.
Lett wrote that the information the trust possesses is “relevant and material to any damages analysis” the may choose to conduct. The order extends beyond tax returns, reaching financial documents that can show how assets are held, valued, and managed inside a revocable trust. In practical terms, that kind of paper trail can help establish whether a claimed loss lines up with a person’s broader financial picture.
The trust pushed back, arguing it should not have to produce the material because it is not a party to the lawsuit and because the request was too broad. Trump’s assets are held in a revocable trust controlled by Donald Trump Jr., and a regulatory filing last year said Trump still has the right to exercise significant influence or control over it. That structure leaves his finances close enough to the case for the to ask for more than a narrow tax snapshot.
Trump’s legal team did not comment on whether it will appeal the ruling, leaving the next move in the trust’s hands.
