U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed Daniel Ogama Adongo in Chicago on June 20, carrying out a removal order that had been issued in March. The former NFL linebacker was 37 years old.
Adongo’s case stood out because he was not just another name in an immigration file. He had played two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts from 2013 until 2015 after coming to the U.S. as a recruited rugby player, a path that put him in the public eye long before ICE moved against him.
ICE said Adongo overstayed his visa in 2016 and later built its case around a record that included multiple arrests over the last decade. Those arrests included felony intimidation, battery and disorderly conduct, and he was convicted of criminal mischief with damage in 2020.
That history is what let ICE frame him as more than a status violator. Douglas Thompson said he was a danger to the community and argued that people who break immigration law are held equally accountable, including former professional athletes. ICE also said under the Laken Riley act, people in the country illegally must be detained without bond if they are convicted of certain crimes.
The removal closes the immediate enforcement action, but it leaves the broader question in place: how many more cases will ICE push to a final order and execute in Chicago under the same playbook. For Adongo, the answer for now is simple. The order was carried out, and he is out of the country.
