KLM Flight KL706 diverted to Tenerife and landed safely on Monday after a suspected medical emergency forced the crew to break off its overnight run from Rio de Janeiro to Amsterdam. The Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, registered PH-BKC, had been in the air for around seven hours when the pilots turned toward Tenerife South Airport in Spain’s Canary Islands.
The aircraft reached the airport at approximately 9:30 am local time, bringing an abrupt end to a transatlantic crossing that had started at Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport on Sunday, 19 July. Medical personnel were already waiting on the ground and boarded the aircraft shortly after landing to assess and assist the affected individual.
That sequence is the kind of response airlines are trained to make when someone on board needs treatment that cannot safely wait for the scheduled destination. In this case, the route from Brazil to the Netherlands was cut short by an emergency landing that was safe on arrival but urgent in the air.
