Mount Etna erupted last Friday on Sicily, sending a thick streak of bright lava down the side of Europe’s largest active volcano. The flow ran at least 300 meters lower than the rupture height, a measure that gives the scale of the burst without turning it into a mystery of numbers.

The scene was captured by Sarah Rainsford, who was at the volcano as the lava lit up the slope in bright orange. The eruption began at an altitude of 3,000 metres, according to the Etna Observatory of the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, placing the rupture high on the mountain even before the lava moved downslope.

That altitude matters because it helps define what the 300-meter figure means: the lava did not travel 300 meters in a straight line from the start of the eruption, but flowed to a point at least 300 meters below where the rupture opened. In other words, the measurement describes the vertical drop from the eruption point, not the full distance the lava may have travelled across the volcano’s flank.

What the footage does not answer is whether the eruption is still active or whether it has caused any damage. The visual picture is clear enough — orange lava on a dark slope, a live volcano in motion — but the technical detail stops at the height and the distance, leaving the rest for a later update. For now, the eruption is being seen for what it is: a fresh burst from Mount Etna, large enough to measure, dramatic enough to travel far beyond Sicily.
