Héctor Bello said his wife Andrea died saving their 1-year-old daughter during the twin quakes that hit Venezuela, turning a family tragedy into one of the clearest personal accounts to emerge from the disaster. Bello said the child survived, but he was left writing about the moment his wife gave her own life for her.
He posted the message on Instagram on Friday overnight, after traveling to Caracas to be with his daughter in the hospital. Bello said the girl and her aunt were doing well and would not be discharged that day, a small piece of relief inside a story defined by loss.
The details make the grief sharper. Bello wrote that his wife was his “precious love” and said he would one day tell their daughter how Andrea saved her, adding that he was not there to do anything while she died. That is the hard edge of this story: the child lived because her mother acted in seconds, and Bello was left to explain to a toddler what she survived and why her mother did not.
Rescuers were still searching through rubble after the twin quakes near Caracas, which killed at least 920 people and injured more than 3,000. Cumaná de Campeones said Andrea was found dead in the rubble after the earthquake and that the family’s daughter survived the collapse of the building where they lived, while other tributes from Caracas Fútbol Club, Club Sport San Agustín, and the FVF marked more lives lost in the same disaster.
For Bello, the next part is not about the earthquake toll or the search operation. It is the hospital, the aunt at his daughter’s side, and the story he will eventually have to tell a child old enough to understand that her first victory in life came at the cost of her mother’s.
