A fire ripped through Viva Dominicus Bayahíbe in the Dominican Republic on Thursday, sending thick black smoke above the resort and forcing hotel staff and guests to move out of the danger zone. Firefighters and other emergency personnel were sent in as the blaze burned through part of the property in La Altagracia province.
The scene quickly became visible far beyond the resort itself. Social media video showed heavy dark smoke rising from the hotel, and another clip appeared to show flames taking hold of a large thatched roof. People at the resort were evacuated to safe areas nearby, including a beach, while crews tried to bring the fire under control.
The urgency was not only in the smoke and flames, but in how quickly the situation appeared to outrun the response around it. One local wrote on social media: “Help. The Dominicus hotel, in Bayahibe, is being affected by a fire.” The same person said the blaze was so aggressive that, although fire trucks were already on the scene, the available equipment was not enough and stronger units were needed to finish the job.
That claim fit the public images, but several questions remained unanswered. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, the extent of the damage was not immediately clear, and it was still unclear whether anyone had been injured. Viva Dominicus Bayahíbe is a holiday resort in the Dominican Republic, and it shares amenities with Dominicus Beach, one of two properties that anchor much of the beachfront in Dominicus.
The resort had recently completed extensive renovations to common areas and improvements to food and drink offerings, making the fire more than just another emergency call. It put a major tourism property back into crisis mode at the very moment guests were being moved to safety and crews were still trying to stop the spread. What happens next will depend on whether the fire is contained quickly enough to spare the rest of the complex and whether investigators can establish what started it.
