gave birth to her baby boy in the back seat of a car at a Sedgefield petrol station after her water broke on a Sunday afternoon and the family could not make it to hospital in time. What began as a rushed trip to the maternity ward ended with an emergency delivery at the station, with bystanders stepping in as the baby arrived.

Frost, from Trimdon in County Durham, had been eating chicken curry at her mother’s house when labour started, nine days before she was due. Her sister, , was driving, while her partner, , was in the passenger seat making emergency calls as they headed for the maternity ward at the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton.

As the car sped on, Frost realized the birth was happening fast. She shouted that she could see and feel the baby and that they needed to pull over. Charlton drove into the no-entry section of the Esso petrol station in Sedgefield, where the family pulled up just as the delivery became unavoidable.

That is where the story turned from a panicked drive into a roadside birth. Staff and customers ran out when it became clear a child was being born, bringing towels, bedsheets and t-shirts to help. Charlton said people from the station were “just running with towels, bedsheets, t-shirts,” as the family tried to manage the delivery in the back seat.

James said Frost stayed calm throughout the birth and kept the situation moving when it could easily have fallen apart. “Sarah was absolutely brilliant, she was so calm,” he said. “Right, Sarah, we’re gonna push.” He added, “We just kind of took it in our stride,” and said, “I don’t think any of us panicked as much as we should have.”

The baby was due in nine days, but instead arrived in a petrol station car park with strangers holding out towels and clothing to help. The hospital in Stockton was still the intended destination, but the urgent part of the journey was already over by the time the family reached Sedgefield. What remains unknown is anything beyond the birth itself, including the baby’s name and the outcome after the emergency delivery.
