The Federation of Western India Cine Employees on Monday officially banned Ranveer Singh and issued a strict non-cooperation directive against him, escalating the row over his abrupt exit from Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3. The film body told the industry not to work with him until the dispute is resolved.
The move turns a behind-the-scenes production fight into a wider industry standoff. FWICE said the matter had been taken up last week and that its final decision was announced at a press conference on Monday, after the producers sought Rs 45 crore in damages linked to the project. The dispute stems from Singh’s sudden exit from Don 3, a development that has now put the actor on the wrong side of one of Bollywood’s most influential labour bodies.
Excel Entertainment filed a complaint in April saying Singh had signed a three-film contract with the banner and that all pre-production damages amounting to Rs 45 crore should be borne entirely by him. Farhan Akhtar is also demanding reimbursement of the pre-production costs, deepening a dispute that has moved from a contract argument to a public industry issue.
FWICE said sudden exits by senior and established actors at crucial stages pose a serious threat to the stability and working ecology of the entertainment industry. In its statement, the federation cast the issue as one involving the whole business, saying the film industry functions as one extended family and that artists, technicians, workers, producers and directors are bound by mutual trust, professional commitments, respect and collective responsibility.
Even with the ban in place, FWICE said it remains open to discussing the matter further with Singh in search of an amicable resolution. That leaves the door open, but only barely, after the federation drew a hard line on what it sees as a breach with consequences beyond one film.
Singh’s spokesperson has taken a different tone, saying professional discussions and personal equations are best handled with dignity, maturity and mutual respect. The spokesperson said he has consciously chosen to maintain silence about the developments surrounding Don 3, holds deep respect and goodwill for everyone involved in the franchise, and will continue to do so while focusing on his work and the commitments ahead. Singh also declined to discuss the matter with FWICE, saying it required an appropriate forum instead.
The clash now sits at the intersection of money, contracts and industry discipline, with the federation warning against abrupt exits and the actor’s camp choosing restraint. What happens next is whether the two sides can even get into the same room before the ban becomes the defining fact of Don 3’s troubled road so far.
