Weather Indianapolis is setting up for a warm, humid stretch as Indy 500 weekend arrives, with May 24 shaping up to be mostly cloudy, at least for now, and carrying just a slight chance of showers. AccuWeather’s 10-day forecast puts the high at 78 degrees and the chance of rain at 30%.
The National Weather Service has not yet set forecasts for Race Day, so the picture remains unfinished. But the numbers already point to a day that should feel more like late spring than the raw edge of May: a very humid morning at 84%, northeast winds around 4 MPH, gusts topping out near 12 MPH and a maximum UV index of 8. There is also a very small chance of thunderstorms, though the day is expected to turn a bit more pleasant by afternoon.
That forecast would fit the long-run pattern. Historic weather analysis shows it has rained only once on May 24 since 2006, and the average temperature over the past 20 years has landed in the upper 60s. The opening of the holiday weekend also looks relatively manageable. Carb Day on May 22 is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 72 degrees and a 25% chance of rain, while humidity should hover between 75% and 85% for most of the day. Lows are expected in the mid-50s.
Legends Day on May 23 should run a little warmer, with a high of 75 degrees and a 30% chance of rain. Humidity is forecast to stay between 47% and 60%, with lows in the high 50s. That sets the table for May 24, which is expected to be the warmest of the first three days, even if clouds keep the sun from dominating the track or the grandstands.
The bigger question is what happens after Race Day. Memorial Day on May 25 carries a 35% chance of rain and a 12% probability of thunderstorms, with a high of 76 degrees. Humidity is expected to reach 87% in the morning and 70% in the afternoon, with lows likely in the 60s and more showers expected in the evening. IndyStar’s historic weather analysis also notes the race has been postponed only once in the last two decades, underscoring how often Indianapolis manages to get through the weekend despite a forecast that always leaves a little room for trouble.
For now, the best read is simple: Race Day looks warm, humid and mostly cloudy, with rain possible but not likely to define the afternoon. The forecast may still shift before Sunday, but the early signal is that weather should be a factor to watch, not the story that stops the race.
