A rescue mission was underway on Mt Mckinley on May 28 after four climbers fell near Denali Pass at 18,200 feet, a high-altitude emergency on North America’s tallest mountain that left officials racing a changing forecast. Park rangers got the report around midnight local time.

The climbers were part of a seven-member team, and three of their partners returned to High Camp at 17,000 feet after tending to them, said , who said officials had been in contact with the group. Carr said the incident remained active and that rescue crews were focused on locating the fallen climbers and notifying family members.

That is why the search is drawing attention now. Mt Mckinley rises 20,310 feet above sea level, and any fall at 18,200 feet carries immediate risk because crews must work in thin air, steep terrain and unpredictable weather. The said officials were actively responding to the incident as they tried to narrow down what had happened and how badly the climbers were hurt.

The weather offered one possible opening. Conditions on the mountain were improving enough that helicopters could soon be used to aid the search, but the extent of the injuries and the climbers’ condition were still unknown. The National Park Service said the situation was still an active incident and that more details would be released when they were confirmed and appropriate to share.

Even so, the forecast left little room for comfort. The said isolated snow showers were expected across Mount McKinley through the end of the week, a reminder that any rescue on the peak can turn quickly if the sky closes again. For now, the next step depends on whether crews can get aircraft into position before the mountain changes its mind.
