Lamine Yamal waved a large Palestinian flag as Barcelona rolled through the city on an open-top bus Monday to celebrate its latest La Liga title, turning a championship parade into a moment that spread far beyond football. The 18-year-old joined the party after missing Sunday’s match against Real Madrid with an injury, then posted a photo of himself with the flag on Instagram after the celebrations.
Barcelona had already sealed its second consecutive first division league title with a 2-0 Clasico win over Real Madrid, and Yamal’s gesture quickly became part of the wider story. Video clips of him waving the flag went viral, and praise poured in from fans, experts, activists and players. Muhammed Akram, writing from Gaza, said the gesture reached the heart in ways words cannot describe, while adding, “Thank you, Lamine Yamal. From Gaza, you are loved more than you know.” Dyab Abou Jahjah also praised him on social media, writing, “When you have a platform, use it,” and “When you have a voice, speak out. Bravo Lamine Yamal.”
The reaction underscored how a simple scene from a championship parade can land differently depending on where it is seen. Yamal has 44.2 million followers on Instagram, and his post with the Palestinian flag drew 5.3 million likes and more than 100,000 shares, giving the image a reach far beyond Barcelona. Mosab Abu Toha commented, “We love you, from Gaza.”
Club coach Hansi Flick said on Tuesday that he had spoken with Yamal about the incident. “If you want to do that, it’s your decision, you’re old enough,” Flick told reporters, signaling that the club would not treat the gesture as a disciplinary issue. The response came as the flag display was widely read as a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
That reading sits against the backdrop of pro-Palestine demonstrations in hundreds of cities over the past two and a half years, with activists continuing to raise the Palestinian flag at major public gatherings, including sports events and celebrations. The broader conflict has already claimed more than 72,740 Palestinians since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, and the story also sits beside the claim that 854 Palestinians were killed during a so-called ceasefire signed last October. For Yamal, the parade may have been a title celebration. For many who saw the clip, it became something else entirely.
