Wizards Vs Thunder: Oklahoma City shorthanded for Saturday clash at Paycom Center

The Oklahoma City Thunder take their three-game winning streak into Saturday’s Wizards Vs Thunder matchup at the Paycom Center, but the run comes with a thin margin for error. Oklahoma City is missing six standard contract players, and that shortage is most visible just as the Thunder try to keep rolling after beating the Cavs twice earlier in the week and then blowing out the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.

That is why the game is drawing attention now. The Thunder are playing on the second night of a back-to-back, Washington arrives at 4-5 with a two-game losing streak, and Oklahoma City has two days off after this one. The timing matters because the usual cushion of depth is gone, which means the regular rotation has less room to absorb foul trouble, fatigue or a slow start.

Ajay Mitchell is one reason Oklahoma City can still feel confident about its offense. He has scored 20-plus points in five of the last six Thunder games and turned in a career-high 35 points against the Memphis Grizzlies, giving the Thunder a scorer who can handle a bigger load when the roster is thinned out. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also did not have to carry the full burden in Memphis, sitting out the entire fourth quarter as the Thunder pulled away.

The absences are not a small detail. Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Jaylin Williams, Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber are all out for Oklahoma City, and Topic and Sorber have yet to log a minute this season. Washington is also short-handed, with Justin Champagnie, Reece Beekman, Felix Okpara, Jamari Watkins and Tristan Vukcevic unavailable. That leaves both sides leaning on shorter benches than usual, even if Oklahoma City’s current form gives it a stronger hand.

The one unresolved piece is Anthony Davis, who is listed as questionable leading up to tip-off. If he cannot go, Washington loses another layer of size and scoring. If he does play, the Thunder will still have to manage a depleted rotation from start to finish, and that is the real test of Saturday night: whether Oklahoma City can protect its streak while the roster around it is stretched as thin as it has been all week.
