Sony Music will release Animals 50 on Jan. 22, 2027, putting Pink Floyd’s 1977 album back in the spotlight with a nine-disc deluxe boxed set and smaller two-disc editions for listeners who want the new material without the full archive haul. The key addition for many fans is Pink Floyd – Sheep (Original Radio Edit), a four-and-a-half-minute cut that had gone to radio for airplay but had never been sold commercially to the public.

That is why this release is already drawing attention well before the date arrives. The title track’s radio edit is being folded into a larger package that also includes the original album, a 2018 remix, rarities, and a live set, all timed to the 50th anniversary of Animals. Sony Music is also offering the contents digitally, while the deluxe edition adds five CDs, three LPs and a Blu-Ray with 5.1 and Atmos mixes.

The set is built around material that collectors have chased for years. The rarities disc adds Young Nicholas Jon, Studio Jam, Dogs (Early Version, Rough Mix), Sheep (Early Version, Rough Mix) and Sheep (Original Radio Edit). The deluxe box also includes a 64-page hardback book with liner notes by Jonathan Lethem, plus unpublished images from the original cover shoot at Battersea Power Station in London. For Pink Floyd fans, it is not just a reissue. It is a rare consolidation of studio outtakes, alternate mixes and archival packaging in one release.

The live material is where the release takes a sharper turn. Live From the Oakland Coliseum captures a 13-track show from May 9, 1977 that was recorded by bootlegger Reinhard Hohlwein when he was 19, and it is being treated as worthy of an official issue despite Pink Floyd’s long, awkward history with professionally recorded concerts from that period. The set runs through Animals and Wish You Were Here in full, adds two The Dark Side of the Moon songs and preserves the last-ever live performance of Careful With That Axe, Eugene, which is exactly the kind of document that can lift a bootleg into the official catalog when the tape is strong enough to carry it.

The oddest detail in the package may be the simplest one: Disc 2 is billed as the 2018 mix even though it was not released until 2022. In practical terms, that means the remix existed for four years before fans could buy it, leaving the new box to do what archival sets often do best, which is close a gap rather than create one. Sony Music has been eager to revisit Pink Floyd’s archive since buying the band’s music rights, and Animals 50 looks like the clearest sign yet that the company intends to keep opening it.

When Jan. 22, 2027 arrives, the question will not be whether there is enough material for the market. It will be whether the officially issued version of Pink Floyd – Sheep (Original Radio Edit), paired with the Oakland bootleg and the rest of the box, finally gives fans a cleaner and more complete way to hear an album that has spent decades circulating in fragments.
