Zac Affleck says he learned his marriage had legally ended from a TMZ reporter. Jen Affleck filed for divorce on Nov. 3, and Zac said on Nov. 5 that he was blindsided by the filing even though the split had been discussed for months.

That detail is now the sharpest point in a breakup that has been moving in public for a year. Zac said Jen first came to him about a year ago, after Dancing With the Stars, and told him she was unhappy and wanted a divorce. He said he begged her to stay, pushed to work on the marriage and told her to become whoever she needed him to be. The couple married in Newport Beach, Calif. in 2019 and share Nora, 5, Luca, 3, and Penelope, 16 months, with a fourth child on the way.

Zac said the marriage was not undone by one moment. He said he made plenty of mistakes, that they married young, and that the pressure of TV, a public marriage and raising children wore them down over time. “Marriage is hard. Having your marriage in the public is hard. Raising kids is hard,” he said, adding that they “slowly over time” lost their spark. Even so, he said he does not want anyone speaking badly about Jen and that his priority is a healthy coparenting relationship.

That leaves the most important unanswered part of the breakup untouched: what changed between Jen’s first push for divorce and her decision to file on Nov. 3. Zac’s account shows a marriage already under strain, but it does not explain why the filing moved ahead now, after a year of talks, a pregnancy and his efforts to keep the family together. What he did make clear is that the separation is no longer private, and both parents now have to build a routine around four children and a child soon to be born.

Zac said he is trying to think beyond the split. He said he wants to re-enroll in medical school, start a business or pursue a PhD, but that his first focus is the children. “That’s really my priorities,” he said, describing the fear of hurting them and the hope that he and Jen can still give them the best life possible. For now, the marriage is over, the filing is public, and the work ahead is no longer about saving the relationship but managing what comes after it.
