The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled Jake Livanavage from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on November 3, 2026, giving the club a young defenseman after a slow opening to the season. The 22-year-old arrived with eight points in nine AHL contests and a spot near the top of the league among defenders in scoring.

That is why his name suddenly matters. Livanavage has already shown he can move quickly through a pro stop, and the Penguins need bodies and production on the blue line after a 5-7-2 start through 14 games left them second-to-last in the Eastern Conference Wild Card standings with a minus-2 goal differential.

The recall also turns on what Livanavage has already done at every level. He is in the second year of a two-year entry-level contract signed last season, and before turning pro he went undrafted out of North Dakota, where he measured 5-foot-10 and 174 pounds but still produced five goals and 25 points in 39 games in his most recent collegiate season. He finished with a career-best plus-15 rating, logged over 25 minutes per night, and helped North Dakota reach the Frozen Four before a semifinal loss to Wisconsin. He also drew year-end All-Star consideration in the NCHC in every season of his college career.

The Penguins are not recalling him into a settled situation. Their defense has been injury-ridden, and scoring from the back end has been thin, with Erik Karlsson and Declan Carlile the only defensemen on the club with multiple goals and Samuel Girard the lone other blue-liner to score. That leaves Livanavage entering a group that needs more than a placeholder. The team has picked up five points since mid-October, but that has not pushed it out of the bottom half of the race.

Livanavage has already had one crack at the NHL, and it was a long night. He played his only game on April 14, 2026, in a 7-5 loss against the St. Louis Blues, logging 25 minutes in that appearance. If he stays with the Penguins, the next question is not whether he can skate into a lineup; it is whether the club sees him as a temporary call-up or the kind of young option it can keep around when the injuries ease.
