Little Giant recalled several ladder models with Rapid Locks after warning that the ladders can suddenly retract if the locks are not fully engaged. The recall covers Adjustable Fortress 2.0, Conquest 2.0, Dark Horse 2.0, Epic, King Kombo XT, Leveler, MegaLite, MegaLite+, Multi, Quantum and Vector, and consumers were told to stop using the affected ladders immediately.
The move matters now because the company has already received 25 reports of ladders retracting and 19 reports of injuries tied to the problem. Those injuries included three head-injury reports and 16 other injury reports, ranging from fractures and lacerations to bruising, and the recall turns a routine home tool into an immediate safety issue for anyone who owns one of the affected models.
Only ladders without an orange rectangular QC sticker on the rail above one of the Rapid Locks are included. The brand name Little Giant and the model name appear on the side of the ladder, and the locks themselves are black or orange pieces on each ladder leg that are designed to fit into the rungs as the ladder is adjusted to height. Little Giant Ladder Systems, LLC, of Springville, Utah, said consumers should review the recall information online or by QR code and contact the company for a repair kit.
That kit includes warning labels and instructions telling users to check that the Rapid Locks are fully engaged before every use and to keep them lubricated. But the company has also received 39 reports that the locks were not working properly, which is why the instructions do not end the story: if a lock still fails after lubrication, consumers are told to contact Little Giant for evaluation, and if the problem remains, the company will offer a replacement ladder of the same or equivalent model or a refund. The refund can run from a depreciated value based on purchase date up to the full purchase price for ladders bought within the past 12 months.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which says it is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury linked to thousands of consumer products, is part of the recall response. The practical question for owners is straightforward: if the ladder lacks the QC sticker and has Rapid Locks, it should not be used until the company’s repair process is complete, because the reported failure is not theoretical anymore.
