A mother and daughter were found dead after a suspected grizzly bear attack near Snooka West Trail in Bella Coola, and authorities said they are still working to determine what happened on the trail close to their home.

The dead were identified as Jenny Balcarras and Selah Reed, and the search took on added urgency because Balcarras had been in Bella Coola to work as an art therapist at a school. The family reported two people missing on Monday, search and rescue teams found one person dead Monday afternoon, and the second person’s remains were found Tuesday afternoon.

The Conservation Officer Service said evidence suggests a grizzly bear may have been involved, but it is not clear how many bears may have taken part and no bears have been captured. The public was asked to avoid the trail area while the investigation continues.

That uncertainty matters because the next step is not only figuring out whether one bear or more than one was involved, but deciding whether any bear linked to the deaths must be dispatched under provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.

The Central Coast Teachers Association said it was deeply saddened by the deaths and described Balcarras as someone who devoted countless hours to connecting with students and working closely with teachers and other staff supporting their well-being. It said she was committed to building relationships and helping students feel known, heard, and supported.

For Bella Coola, the shock is tied to how ordinary the setting was: a trail very close to home. For investigators, the unanswered question is whether the signs left behind can narrow down the number of bears involved before the public warning gives way to a more forceful wildlife response.
