Dillon Dingler won his second Gold Glove Award in as many years, beating Brandon Valenzuela and Austin Wells to finish the 2026 season as the American League’s top catcher in the field. The Detroit Tigers backstop also became the first Tigers catcher to win back-to-back American League Gold Glove Awards since Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez did it in 2006-2007.
The win gives the Tigers a rare piece of history and puts Dingler in a small group of catchers who have repeated as Gold Glove winners. He also became the first AL catcher to go back-to-back since Roberto Perez with the Cleveland Guardians in 2019-2020, a stretch that underscores how hard it is to hold that standard even when the margin is measured in defense, not offense.
That is part of what makes Dingler’s case stand out. His hitting prowess did not decide the award, even though he showed in 2026 that he could be a dual threat. The Gold Glove went to the cleaner work behind the plate: 11 Blocks Above Average, good for the 95th percentile; 5 Caught Stealing Above Average, in the 93rd percentile; a 9 Framing score, which placed him in the 100th percentile; and a 1.86-second Pop-Time, in the 95th percentile.
Statcast backed up the result with bigger-picture numbers, too. Dingler finished with the best fielding run value among catchers across Major League Baseball at 17, while Joe Mack of the Miami Marlins was next at 13. He also showed success with ABS Challenge Success Rate, adding another layer to a season that clearly separated him from the other finalists.
What the award did not settle is how close the vote really was. The available metrics show why Dingler won, but they do not spell out the exact voting margin over Valenzuela and Wells. What is clear is that the Tigers have a catcher doing something the club had not seen in two decades, and Dingler has turned a strong defensive season into a piece of franchise history.
