The Eagles and Washington Commanders went into Sunday Night Football in Landover, Maryland with their Week 8 inactive lists set, and five of Philadelphia’s six scratches were injury-related. DeVonta Smith, Britain Covey, Jihaad Campbell, Jonathan Jones and Dontayvion Wicks were all ruled out, while the Commanders were without Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, Fabian Moreau and Isaac Yiadom.

That left the game to turn on depth as much as star power. The Eagles still had all three quarterbacks available, and Saquon Barkley was cleared to play even as Philadelphia lost multiple offensive pieces, a useful break for a team that had already won the season opener against Washington.

The biggest change for Philadelphia came on defense, where Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was expected to take the bulk of the inside linebacker snaps next to Zack Baun with Jihaad Campbell sidelined. With Campbell out because of hamstring and quad injuries, the role shifted from a rotation to a simple numbers game: one linebacker vacated, one linebacker asked to absorb most of the extra work, and the rest of the plan built around that adjustment.

Philadelphia’s receiving group also thinned out fast. Smith and Wicks missed their second straight game, Covey was out with a knee injury, and Jake Majors sat for the second week in a row, while the Commanders had their own problems up front after Payne was added to the Injury List on Friday with a foot injury and Kinlaw was out after the knee injury he sustained against the 49ers in Week 6. Payne had been listed as questionable after a limited practice, but he still did not dress.

That is where the clean injury report starts to give way to the real problem for both sides. The Eagles elevated Elijah Mitchell and Mason Reiger from the practice squad on Saturday, a sign they needed extra bodies ready before kickoff, and the Commanders had to play without both of their interior defensive tackles. Treylon Burks was active after being listed as questionable, but Washington’s front was still short-handed, and Philadelphia entered the night with enough healthy players to keep its core intact even if the depth chart around it had been stripped down.

By kickoff at 8:20 PM, the roster moves had already decided part of the story. The matchup was still a primetime rematch, but the more immediate question was how long either side could hold up under the absences. For the Eagles, Trotter’s increased snaps were the clearest test. For the Commanders, life without Payne and Kinlaw meant the middle of the defense would have to survive on patchwork answers.
