Lewis Uvwo made his choice on Wednesday and committed to Providence, ending a recruiting race that had drawn Kentucky, Baylor and Cal into the final round. The 6-foot-11 center, a five-star prospect, announced the decision in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he attends Prolific Prep.

The move gives Providence one of the most coveted big men in the class of 2027. ranked Uvwo as the sixth-best prospect overall, while 247Sports and Rivals/On3 each placed him No. 7 nationally. He entered the decision as the top-rated center prospect in the country, and his commitment immediately shifts the focus from who wanted him to what Providence just landed.

Those rankings help explain why the choice carried so much weight. Uvwo also had offers from Duke, Michigan, Kansas, Texas, North Carolina, Houston and UCLA, but the final debate came down to four schools. Rivals/On3 gave Kentucky the best chance at 26.1 percent, followed by Baylor at 22.8 percent, Cal at 19.6 percent and Providence at 15.8 percent, which made the Friars' win over a field that included Cal a notable finish to the process.

The path to that point was unusual even by recruiting standards. Uvwo is from Nigeria and moved to the United States in 2025, and he started playing organized basketball at 15 years old. In that short span, he developed into a 225-pound center who averaged 6.1 blocks on the Nike EYBL circuit, a pace that turned raw size into a national profile almost overnight.

Cal had reasons to feel alive in the race, too. Mark Madsen already had a commitment from Gene Roebuck for 2027, and a second elite piece would have made a strong push in the class. Instead, Uvwo's choice leaves Providence with the biggest prize of the day and sets the stage for his next step in college basketball, where the question is no longer who will sign him but how quickly he can translate that reach and timing into winning.
