Gunfire broke out just before 10 p.m. Monday night near Irvington Avenue and Oakwood Place in Elizabeth, turning a vigil into a crime scene and leaving one person dead and up to four others injured. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were taken to University Hospital in Newark.
The injuries tell part of the story. One transported victim was shot in the chest, and two others suffered gunshot wounds to the arms and legs, underscoring how quickly the violence spread through a gathering that witnesses said had drawn a large crowd. People at the scene reported hearing a barrage of gunfire, and investigators were left processing dozens of shell casings across a crime scene that stretched for several blocks.
That stretch of street matters because it shows this was not a single, contained burst of violence. It unfolded in a crowded part of Elizabeth, where a vigil was already underway when the shooting began. Officials said a gun was discovered on one of the victims, but investigators have not said whether it was tied to the gunfire, a detail that leaves open a basic question about what happened in those few seconds near Irvington Avenue.
Investigators are also working through a trail that began with a red sedan seen fleeing westbound on Morris Avenue and continued about an hour later, when a red sedan was found burning on Hobson Street in Newark. Police and prosecutors are trying to determine whether the two vehicles are connected. Officials have identified two people of interest, but no arrests had been made, and Elizabeth Police referred questions to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.
For now, the case sits at the point where fast-moving facts outpace answers. A vigil ended with a death, multiple injuries and a scattered scene of shell casings, but the reason the shooting started and who pulled the trigger remain unresolved. That is where the investigation stands: two people of interest, no arrests and a burning car that may or may not be part of the same chain of events.
