John Harbaugh said Cam Skattebo was always going to matter this season, and he said it again on 10/23 with a sharper edge: Skattebo had a heck of a week of practice. That came as the team turned its attention to the next game, one Harbaugh described as a test against a very tough opponent in a tough environment.
The update matters because it was not framed as a one-man push. Harbaugh said all the backs had a heck of a week of practice, and he singled out Skattebo no less than anyone else. For a player in a crowded backfield, that is the kind of public note that can shape how a coaching staff uses snaps, carries and roles when the games get harder.
Harbaugh also made clear why the roster picture was so complicated. He said it is hard to carry four backs, and that there were other moves that had to be made to get guys on the roster. In other words, the practice praise sat beside a blunt reality: strong weeks do not remove the math of the roster, and the staff still has to decide which backs can be active and when.
He pointed to Najee Harris as part of that same conversation, saying Harris ran super hard but did not have much room in the plays he had over the last couple of weeks. Harbaugh added that Harris was not cut because of what he did or did not do, but because the team decided to go forward with the guys who would get a shot. That leaves Skattebo in a better public position than before, but not yet with a defined role spelled out for the next game.
Harbaugh’s point was simple: the team believes it is ready, the backs had a strong week again, and the next test is the one that will show what that means. The practice praise may open the door for Skattebo, but the final answer will come only when the team has to play its best football in a difficult setting.
